Yakety Sax is a country-pop novelty instrumental composed by James Q. “Spider“ Rich and Saxophonist Boots Randolph. Randolph popularized it via his 1963 recording, which reached number 35 on the pop charts. UK comedian Benny Hill later made it more widely known as the closing theme music of The Benny Hill Show. Guitar legend Chet Atkins recorded a version of the song in 1965 called “Yakety Axe”, showcasing his country guitar picking style in place of the saxophone.

My arrangement is in the non-pedal steel E9th tuning popularized by Jerry Byrd and others. It‘s arranged for the 6-string version but can easily be adapted to the 8-string version as well as the E13th tuning.

E9Th Tuning (low to high) D E F# G# B E

8-string version: G# B D E F# G# B E

Note: computer-generated audio usually sounds closer to a keyboard than a steel guitar but it is useful for demonstrating the rhythms, feel and overall intent of an arrangement or musical passage. Make this music come alive on your steel guitar.
