The Shadow of Your Smile was written by Johnny Mandel with lyrics written by Paul Francis Webster for the 1965 film “The Sandpiper”. It won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year and the Academy Award for Best Original Song. It has since become a standard and a favorite of jazz musicians.

Even though Jerry Byrd advocated that seven strings are necessary for C Diatonic, all of the arrangements in this book are for the 6-string version of C Diatonic tuning. Seven-string guitars are quite rare and most players today use 6-string or 8-string lap steels. The author has found that the 6-string version with a low F note is versatile for a wide variety of music and accessible to more players than the 7-string tuning Byrd used.
