SUMMERTIME is transcendant artistic achievment in American music composed by George Gershwin in 1934 as an aria for the opera Porgy and Bess. Gershwin’s evocative writing brilliantly mixed elements of jazz with African American song styles of the early twentieth century. Summertime later became a popular and much-recorded jazz standard.
My arrangement starts with one chorus in a simple single note style. The second chorus is intended to demonstrate some ideas for embellishing the basic melody using slides, harmonized double stops and arpeggios.
