Sultans of Swing is an iconic song by the British rock band ‘Dire Straits’, written by lead vocalist Mark Knopfler. The song has become something of a rite of passage for guitarists but I wanted to make it also accessible for lap steel players. ‘Sultans’ in the key of D minor.  It uses a chord progression of Dm–C–Bb-A for the verses, and  F–C–Bb for the choruses. My arrangement paraphrases the melody of the song but does not duplicate it exactly. Likewise, the two solo sections are an amalgam of various versions Knopfler played, at times simplified to better fit the lap steel. Throughout the arrangement, you can always opt to simplify and leave out notes. The character of the lap steel with its sustained chords and notes will still sound just fine.
