Steelin' Home was composed by electric steel guitar legend Noel Boggs and released by Columbia Records in 1954, credited to Noel Boggs and His Day Sleepers. Boggs played and recorded with almost every major artist in the western swing genre including Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys and Spade Cooley. Boggs appeared on over 2,000 recordings as a soloist and his playing was prominent on several of Wills’ hits that became western swing standards.

Steelin’ Home is one of the all-time favorites of many swing- oriented lap steel players. Boggs recorded a number of versions of the song over the years and varied his approach in each recording. My arrangement reflects an amalgam of Boggs’ phrasing along with my own ideas. While Boggs likely used A6th tuning on his original recordings, the song sits perfectly in the standard C6th tuning..

Note: Midi audio usually sounds closer to a keyboard than a steel guitar but it is useful for demonstrating the rhythms, feel and overall intent of an arrangement or musical passage. Make this music come alive on your steel guitar!
