Steel guitarists Jerry Byrd and Walter Haynes co-wrote this snappy classic Country instrumental.   “Slippery Elm” appeared on Jerry Byrd’s classic 1958 LP “Hi-Fi Guitar.”   The tune is a tour de force of hammer-on and pull-off licks taken through a classic Ragtime chord progression. It’s unusual in structure in that it has two different bridges - a [B] and [C] section - that follow the verse in the [A] section and are asymetrical in their number of bars. Although Byrd used a seven-string Rickenbacher Bakelite guitar on the recording (with a C# on string seven), the entirety of the song was apparently played on only the first six strings. It’s a unique and fun tune to play. Enjoy!

Note: Midi audio usually sounds closer to a keyboard than a steel guitar but it is useful for demonstrating the rhythms, feel and overall intent of an arrangement or musical passage. Make this music come alive on your steel guitar!
