MOON RIVER was composed by Henry Mancini with lyrics by Johnny Mercer for the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffanys. Audrey Hepburn performed the song in the movie accompanied by only guitarist Bob Bain. The song won an Academy Award for Best Original Song as well as 1962 Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

With a simple, beautiful song such as Moon River, I wanted to make this a lovely chord melody that could stand on its own as a solo steel guitar performance. My models for this were guitarists Ted Greene and Tony Mottola and steel guitarists Jerry Byrd and Buddy Emmons. Since this is not intended as a jazz performance, I stuck closely to Mancini’s original harmonies and avoided runs and other techniques that can get in the way of expressing a pure melody.
