Kayton Roberts was an icon of Country non-pedal steel guitar.  He spent 30 years touring the world with vocalist Hank Snow and later contributed his unique steel playing to the music of John Fogerty, Allison Krauss, George Jones, Marty Stuart and many others. Kayton’s Rag is a tour-de-force of Kayton’s techniques from string bending to Western Swing phrasing to Speedy West-like high register glissandi - all built on the scaffolding of a Ragtime chord sequence. While Roberts played this tune on his 1951 8-string Fender, Kayton’s Rag is transcribed here in Jerry Byrd’s 6-string C6th/A7 tuning. Note that C6/A7 is a compound tuning because the top 5 strings form a C6th chord while the bottom four strings form an A7th chord. This arrangement includes tips and diagrams for blocking, 3-string slants technique, and behind-the-bar bending techniques.

Note: Midi audio usually sounds closer to a keyboard than a steel guitar but it is useful for demonstrating the rhythms, feel and overall intent of an arrangement or musical passage. Make this music come alive on your steel guitar!

Kayton wrote this instrumental several years ago. Here's an up-close view of how he gets it done.
