“It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie” is a 1936 popular song written by Billy Mayhew, introduced that year on records by many dance bands and later popularized by jazz great, Fats Waller. Dixieland horn and reed players, western swing bands and steel guitar players have all shown a fondness for the song and players as different as Vance Terry and Roy Smeck have recorded the song through the years.

My arrangement is a straightforward chord melody take on the tune. The first few notes of the melody use Vance Terry’s phrasing from his recording of the tune with guitarist Jimmie Rivers. The song lays out well for lap steel in several tunings but E9th lends its own timbre and flavor.
