Flamingo is a popular song and jazz standard first recorded by singer Herb Jeffries with the Duke Ellington Orchestra in December of 1940. It is most commonly performed as a lush, dreamy ballad. Saxophonist Earl Bostic’s version, however, was an R&B stomper!  Bostic was a pioneer of the post-war American rhythm and blues style. He had a number of popular hits, including “Flamingo”, which he first recorded in 1951. The song was a jukebox hit at the time and showcased Bostic’s characteristic growl sound on the horn. My arrangement is about 75% a transcription of what Bostic played adapted as necessary to better fit steel guitar, along with my own ideas and a chord progression largely borrowed from my friend, master steel guitarist John Ely.

Note: Midi audio usually sounds closer to a keyboard than a steel guitar but it is useful for demonstrating the rhythms, feel and overall intent of an arrangement or musical passage. Make this music come alive on your steel guitar!
