Choctaw Hayride is a bluegrass instrumental written by Jerry Douglas (on dobro) for the band Alison Krauss and Union Station. In arranging this song for electric lap steel in C6th tuning, I found I didn’t want to try to do a transcription but rather, to interpret the tune with the sustain of the electric instrument in mind. Jerry’s flurries of 16th notes that work so well on a Dobro can sound like a wash of sound on a lap steel, so I often changed 16th notes to 8th notes, deleted notes, harmonized many passages in double stops and sometimes, created new sections not in the original tune, harmonized using 3-note chords. Choctaw Hayride is a challenging song to play but a lot of fun and a tribute to the playing and composing genius of Jerry Douglas.
