“Cast Your Fate To the Wind” won a Grammy Award in 1963 for “Best Original Jazz Composition” and has been covered by many artists in a wide range of genres.

Vince Guaraldi’s original arrangement for piano was in the key of Ab. My arrangement for steel guitar was  strongly influenced  by Earl Klugh’s beautiful version for classical guitar on his 2013 CD  “Hand Picked.  Like Earl Klugh’s, this arrangement is in the key of E. This steel guitar arrangement uses a variation of Open D  tuning (a slash chord tuning: D over and E bass) to take advantage of the open string E in the bass as well as to achieve some nice chord voicings for the key of E. Guaraldi’s original version featured a straight 8th notes for the [A] section. His bridge featured this chord progression: Ab7, Eb7, Ab7, Eb7 in a swing feel. Klugh’s arrangement featured a brand new bridge he composed that retained the straight 8th feel of the [A] part. The [B] section in my arrangement combines some of the melodic motifs and harmony Klugh used with a few of my own ideas. This is a tune that is well set-up for alternative harmonic and melodic ideas and I encourage you to bring out your own creativity in moving beyond the written arrangement to make it your own.

Note: Midi audio usually sounds closer to a keyboard than a steel guitar but it is useful for demonstrating the rhythms, feel and overall intent of an arrangement or musical passage. Make this music come alive on your steel guitar!
