AUTUMN LEAVES is a popular song and jazz standard composed by Joseph Kosma. J ohnny Mercer wrote the English lyric and gave it the title “Autumn Leaves”. My arrangement for lap steel is based on a performance of the song by jazz guitar legend Barney Kessel on standard guitar. In adapting Barney’s version of the tune for steel guitar, it was a matter of simplifying complex passages to be playable on lap steel as well as making aesthetic choices to re-compose or re-arrange given passages to allow the tone and sustain of lap steel to shine.

This tune is particularly wide open to improvisation and reharmonization. Though he seemed to have a shell arrangement to start from, Barney played it differently each time. This arrangement is not difficult to play and I hope you enjoy i as much as I did creating it!
