ARRANGED FOR LAP STEEL IN TABLATURE + STANDARD NOTATION (audio sample below)

R ed Sails in the Sunset is a popular standard song written in 1935 by by Hugh Williams with lyrics by Jimmy Kennedy. The song was inspired by the “red sails” of a yacht Kennedy saw off the northern coast of Ireland. Despite this Irish inspiration, Red Sails in the Sunset usually evokes a tropical, island vibe and has been a staple for Hawaiian musicians for decades. There are many instrumental and vocal versions including those by jazz musicians, Louie Armstrong and Nat King Cole. This arrangement uses single notes, dyad, strummed chords and palm harmonics to express the songs tranquil melody.

C6th tuning is one of the most popular and versatile lap steel tunings in use today due to the wide range of available chord inversions available in the straight bar and slant positions and the logical way scale tones lie on adjacent strings. C6th is used in diverse genres of music including Western Swing, Jazz, Hawaiian, Blues, Pop,  Sacred music and melodic Rock & Roll. The notes of the tuning spell out both a C6th chord and an Amin7 chord, but the tuning is popularly called C6th.
