Moana Chimes is one of the great traditional Hawaiian steel guitar instrumental tunes. It’s been recorded by many steel and slack key artists on both acoustic and electric instruments. This version is transcribed from a classic 49th State LP (#3402) featuring steel guitarist Benjamin “Benny” Rogers. His control of palm harmonics here - in both composed and improvised passages - is nothing short of breathtaking. This transcription includes his first four choruses. Rogers tuning on this recording was identical to C6th tuning up one whole step to D. While he typically used a b7 note on string six, on this recording, he seems to have used a root note in the bass. The music and tab has been transposed down one whole step to C6th tuning.

Note: Midi audio usually sounds closer to a keyboard than a steel guitar but it is useful for demonstrating the rhythms, feel and overall intent of an arrangement or musical passage. Make this music come alive on your steel guitar!
