JOAQUIN MURPHEY - AOLE PILIKIA (“No Problem”) Arrangement: Andy Volk

Earl “Joaquin” Murphey is one of the most influential steel guitarists in history. When Murphey first arrived on the Los Angeles music scene of the 1940s, audiences were captivated by the swinging creativity of his improvised solos. Joaquin’s playing in Western Swing music with Spade Coolley, Tex Williams and others combined previously unheard rhythmic and melodic invention with an ear for modern harmony delivered with astonishing technique and consummate musicality.  Aloe Pilikia* appeared on a 1970s recording called Hawaii Forever that was apparently, released only on cassette tape. Despite all the songs on the recording having Hawaiian titles, they were almost all original swing tunes composed by Murphey. The tune combines Murphy‘s trademark, rapid-fire single note lines, hammer-ons, pull-offs and 3-note chord voicings played in both straight and slant bar positions. Take it slow and enjoy this fabulous, swinging steel tune.

Note: Midi audio usually sounds closer to a keyboard than a steel guitar but it is useful for demonstrating the rhythms, feel and overall intent of an arrangement or musical passage. Make this music come alive on your steel guitar!
