ARRANGED BY ANDY VOLK FOR LAP STEEL IN TABLATURE + STANDARD NOTATION (audio sample below)

Hula Blues is one of the great war horses of the early Hawaiian steel guitar repertoire with steel guitar master Sol Ho‘opi‘i‘s version likely the definitive version. Composer Johnny Noble was one of the key figures behind the development of the hapa haole (half white) style of music in Honolulu, and played a leading role in introducing Hawaiian music to the mainland United States. In form, it‘s neither a Hula nor a blues but rather a Tin Pan Alley fantasy on popular notions about Hawaii that were typical of its time. It‘s a fun song to play!

Note: Midi audio usually sounds closer to a keyboard than a steel guitar but it is useful for demonstrating the rhythms, feel and overall intent of an arrangement or musical passage. Make this music come alive on your steel guitar!
