From the soundtrack of The Descendants , a 2011 Academy Award-winning film One of the standout songs on the soundtrack was the gorgeous slack key original tune Deep in an Ancient Hawaiian Forest, composed by Makana (Matthew Swalinkavich). Makana is a Hawaiian word meaning “the gift”).

My arrangement for lap-style guitar uses many of the themes of his composition but it is NOT a note-for-note copy but rather, MY INTERPRETATION of several of the song’s main motifs. The original slack key version was in this tuning (low to high) B, F#, D, A F, E, D which could be called Dadd9/13. I’ve used a variation of Open D tuning that raises the 4th string D one whole step to E, giving us a Dadd9 tuning.
