Crosscut Saw is a blues song first released in 1941 by Mississippi bluesman Tommy McClennan and since covered by many blues artists. In 1966, Albert King recorded his version which used a very compelling Afro-Cuban rhythm pattern which made it feel different and unique. The song was included on King’s “Born Under a Bad Sign” album, which became one of the most popular and influential blues albums of the late 1960s.

My arrangement for lap steel uses D9th tuning, a one-string variation on the popular C6th  tuning where we flat string #4 by one half step. As you can see by the charts below, if we then conceive the open tuning as based on a D9th chord instead of a C6th chord, we have a strong dominant 9th sound while retaining the advantages of the C6th tuning for convenient single note playing.

Note: Midi audio usually sounds closer to a keyboard than a steel guitar but it is useful for demonstrating the rhythms, feel and overall intent of an arrangement or musical passage. Make this music come alive on your steel guitar!
