Come A Little Closer was composed by the prolific Nashville-based husband/wife songwriting team of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. They wrote over 6,000 songs together including the Everly Brothers hits Bye Bye Love and All I have to Do is Dream. Jerry Byrd included the song on Hi-Fi Guitar, his classic 1958 LP recorded for Decca, using his 7-string, C-Diatonic tuning. I’ve arranged it here for 6-string C-Diatonic, eliminating the low E. If you have a 7-string guitar, it will work fine in that tuning too.

Jerry Byrd’s C-DIATONIC TUNING

6-STRINGS (low to high): F G A B C E

7-STRINGS (low to high): E F G A B C E

Notice that the 6-string C Diatonic tuning contains four of the same notes as C6th tuning. The 7-string version also contains the low E from C6th. So, we only have two notes in C-Diatonic that differ from C6th tuning: F and B - the 4th and major 7th of the C Diatonic scale. So, we have much of the playability and power of C6th for chord melody coupled with additional possibilities for harmonies and straight bar scale runs not present in C6th.

Note: Midi audio usually sounds closer to a keyboard than a steel guitar but it is useful for demonstrating the rhythms, feel and overall intent of an arrangement or musical passage. Make this music come alive on your steel guitar!
