ARRANGED FOR LAP STEEL IN TABLATURE + STANDARD NOTATION (audio sample below)

Bumpin’ on Sunset is an original song by seminal jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery that first appeared on his 1966 LP Tequila. In contrast to Montgomery’s many swinging performances, this song has a straight eighth note feel throughout and for the (A) section, is a bluesy Latin-tinged vamp on an A minor seventh chord. The (B) section provides a sense of release with its melodies harmonized with additional chords.

My arrangement for C6th lap steel attempts to distill the song to its essence and simplify some of the passages (as well as number of bars) to focus on the key melodies and take advantage of the sustain of the steel guitar. “Bumpin’” is a wide open canvas for your improvisational ideas including blues scales, minor scales, chord inversions and other ideas to play off the rhythm and minor colors of the harmony.

C6th tuning is one of the most popular and versatile lap steel tunings in use today due to the wide range of  available chord inversions available in the straight bar and slant positions and the logical way scale tones lie on adjacent strings. C6th is used in diverse genres of music including Western Swing, Jazz, Hawaiian, Blues, Pop,  Sacred music and melodic Rock & Roll. The notes of the tuning spell out both a C6th chord and an Amin7 chord, but the tuning is popularly called C6th.
