Bolero is a 1928 composition for large orchestra by French composer Maurice Ravel. It is one of Ravel’s most famous compositions and also one of his last completed works. Arranging any complex orchestral piece for one steel guitar demands compromises. Bolero has a unique structure where the melody is repeated with variations over and over, producing a hynotic effect. The original orchestral piece builds over time to a crescendo while sharing the melody among instruments. Here, I have attempted to distill the piece into its main themes and the repeated rhythmic figure that ties everything together. I have eliminated some of the repeats as well as the crescendo build. This is intended as a solo lap steel arrangement.
