FRANCIS LAI’S theme from the 1966 French film “A Man and A Woman” became one of the most beloved movie themes ever written almost immediately and the film became a sensation everywhere it played. The website Kritzerland describes it perfectly: “....fresh, unique, and beguiling, and so was its score by Francis Lai. It was the perfect marriage of image and music.”

My lap steel arrangement combines triad chords, octaves and single notes. The song is unusual in structure as it moves from 4/4 to 2/4 time signature for only one bar at a time and then after returning to 4/4, features a coda in 3/4 time. In practice, these transitions feel natural and organic to play.

Note: computer-generated audio usually sounds closer to a keyboard than a steel guitar but it is useful for demonstrating the rhythms, feel and overall intent of an arrangement or musical passage. Make this music come alive on your steel guitar
