Open D tuning (from low to high: D A D F# A D) offers a wide range of powerful and beautiful sounds for lap-style guitar playing that open up a brand new palette of musical colors. The array of notes in Open D allow you to create unusual chord combinations and interesting sustained tonal clusters that would be difficult or impossible in standard guitar tuning. Having the root on the top and bottom of the tuning can be very handy for melody work and you have a strong root-5th-root on the bottom that works as a power chord and a substitute minor as well as for bass lines or drones.
