Scarborough Fair is an English ballad that has been traced as far back as 1670. Dozens of versions existed by the end of the 18th century. The references to the traditional English fair, “Scarborough Fair” and the refrain “parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme” date to 19th century. Simon and Garfunkel’s 1960s arrangement made this somewhat obscure folk song a world-wide hit.
