Quiet Village is an orchestral instrumental that was written and performed by Les Baxter in 1951. The song is perhaps best know from the 1959 LP Quiet Village by Martin Denny. Denny’s group used exotic percussion instruments plus faux bird calls to create a sonic tapestry. The song became a minor hit and Denny’s version is a lodestone for the entire Exotica genre. My arrangement for C6th lap steel is directly based on the 1991 recording of the song by virtuoso guitarist Danny Gatton that appeared on his CD 88 Elmira Street. Gatton changed the dreamy feel of the Baxter and Denny versions of the tune to a more groove-oriented feel with a distinctive “A to G“ chordal vamp as the scaffolding of his arrangment. I’ve transcribed this vamp as well as several bars in the style of Gatton’s solo on the song before leaving it up to you to continue improvising over the vamp.

Note: Midi audio usually sounds closer to a keyboard than a steel guitar but it is useful for demonstrating the rhythms, feel and overall intent of an arrangement or musical passage. Make this music come alive on your steel guitar!
