Moonlight in Vermont is one of the most cinematic and atmospheric tunes in the standard repertoire. The song has been recorded by countless jazz vocalists and instrumentalists. Jazz guitarist Johnny Smith’s arrangement of the song was recorded in 1952 with Stan Getz on sax and later, became the title track of Smith’s 1956 album “Moonlight in Vermont”. His arrangement of “Moonlight” is considered a template for absolute chord melody mastery.

In adapting Smith’s arrangement for lap steel, while the C6th tuning facilitates Smith’s trademark close-interval chord voicings, not everything can translate exactly to steel. So it was a matter of reducing things down to the essential notes and looking for the places where the rich sustain of the steel guitar could shine.

The C6/A7 tuning is identical to the standard 6-string C6th tuning except that the 6th string is raised one half step to C#. This small change facilitates certain chords and single note passages but the straight C6th tuning can work as well.
