JERRY BYRD’S CLASSIC ARRANGEMENT

I’m  Confessin (That I Love You) is a jazz and popular standard that has been recorded by many vocalists and instrumentalists. Louis Armstrong made his first, and highly influential, recording of the song in August 1930, and continued to play it throughout his career.

Jerry Byrd was a complete master of the instrument and his arrangement of this song is quite challenging. Byrd arranged the song in the unusual key of Db to take advantage of open strings. He also used his signature C6/A7 tuning. By tuning the 6th string C note in C6th up 1/2 step to C#, we get an A7th chord on the bottom four strings and access to 7th and diminshed voicings and alternate bass notes. String #6 is only used occasionally in this arrangement but it’s still an easy  alteration that comes in quite handy.
